Why is the news plural?

Why is the news new?

The corner gas station divides the warm greasy wind from the restaurant next door and the monoxide dryer stench from the laundromat. The scent of gasoline cuts the flavor of coffee which has erased the flavor of coffee. The cold is numbing as you manipulate the metal gascap and put the nozzle in. The rumble of traffic, hissing of brakes, beeping of a truck backing up, honking, and distant muzak goes unnoticed. The noon December sun turns the snow into fluorescence and sets the metal bumpers aflame. The man thumps a bundle of papers into the machine and slams the door closed, and his truck pulls away.

Black and white. Almost exclusively text. The sun renders it fluorescent and sets it aflame.
